Future of FrOS

Hey all, we occasionally are being asked what the future for FrOS is now that FrSky has developed the new Ethos firmware.

Well, as you may have noticed there have not been many FrOS updates or bug fixes for the last year or so. This is because FrSky has been putting all efforts into Ethos, and had decided that FrOS was too difficult to be maintained anymore.

So even if FrSky wanted to stay with FrOS, it was going to need a major rewrite, you see FrOS was never developed correctly to start with. It was rushed into production, the thinking was they would go back and clean up the code later, well, as these things go, they just kept developing and fixing things, things just got worse and worse. My understanding is it was getting very difficult to make any substantial changes without breaking other parts, and big changes were needed. This lead to a clean restart and using much better methods and giving the project a lot more time.

This brings us to Ethos. Very soon FrSky should be changing the status from Beta to a release version. Ethos can be run on the X10 Express and an X10 that has had an ISRM upgrade. (We do have the board for this at Aloft, should be up on the site, but if not, you can email us about it.)

Before you install it on your working Horus, give the simulator a try on your Windows computer. Make sure it is something you would like to give a try. I do think you will like it. Also, along this front, frSky is investing in a professionally written manual, so you may want to wait for that as it will make things easier. :)

I wanted to explain this to you all so you would understand. I do think FrSky did the correct thing. FrOS was not hitting the goal they needed to reach. They needed something that was easy for the customers to use, powerful to program complex setups and above all reliable.

In the end, if you love your current FrOS, then keep using it! There is nothing wrong with that.

I hope this helps.

I have 6 airframes with the RX8R receiver and my X10s radio, all of which are performing very well. Is there any reason to panic or can I can continue to use FROS well into the future ? In other words, it will remain operational correct ?

If its working today it will continue to work just fine. However its at the end of the development cycle so no further updates will be forth coming.
