FrzSky receivers for gas

I have been away from rc for about 9 months, but coming back very soon, i noticed frsky has new receiver models and was wondering which series works best with gas planes 20-120cc,as i still have the first gen archer receivers , but need to buy alot more, and i currently use the X20s radio I also do like to you the stab versions as well! Thanks

The archers are great. No issues.

Since you are flying some big planes, you may want to check out the Tandems as they are dual frequency. Otherwise pretty much the same.

I wasn't sure if there where any issues using 900 around gas, as i was looking at those as well, so maybe get the archer plus for smaller gas and use the tandems for larger!

On my two gassers, I use the PRO version of the receivers for extra noise filtering and also have a backup receiver connected via sbus for redundancy. Just for peace of mind. So you can go that route or use Tandem or Twin.

Plus a battery powering the system with twin outs and powers in. Batteries rarely fail... but the other components do.

Hi guys,

I purchased one of the original Taranis XD9 radios when first released and never looked back. Even though I managed to secure one of the newer Horus radios, I never saw the need to switch.

One of my gas model had a crash a couple weeks ago and I transferred the receiver to another aircraft that was set up for Spektrum. There are no visible signs of damage to the receiver, however, I’m thinking it may not be a bad idea to purchase a replacement.

Do you think I need to replace the receiver?
If yes, are the Archer Pro family of receivers compatible with the Taranis XD9?
Which would be recommended as a drop in replacement for the D8R-II Plus?

Thank you

Hey Dale,

Sounds like you may not have upgraded your firmware in the transmitter. If that is the case, then you should probably start there. It will be a bit of a pain if you have a really old radio. For sure backup the radio first as you have a pretty high chance of losing your model memories if you do not take some baby steps in this process.

Another option would be to use something like our X8R with Uni firmware installed. It is a great replacement for the D8R-II, just need to bind in D-16 mode on the Taranis. And you should be good to go. We are currently sold out, and waiting to hear from FrSky if they have any more of these available, we may have run them dry. It is a very old receiver at this point.

The other option would be one of the Archer receivers, this will require you to upgrade your RF firmware to a current version. (This is not OpenTX firmware, but the RF firmware. I think you should also update OpenTX at the same time.) The Archer R8 should be a good fit for you if you need 8 channels:

If you have a lot of hours on the Taranis, it may not be a bad idea to consider a modern replacement. The gimbals on the X9D do fatigue with age, pay close attention to the wires going to the gimbals. The newer radios are really nice and easier to use. Frsky has come a long way. The X14 is sort of the modern Taranis.

Hope this helps. If you run into any issues, just ask. Many folks here have gone through the updating process, etc.

I completely agree. I only have one battery on my gassers. The need for a separate ignition battery is obsolete since the advent of spread spectrum 2.4GHz radios. I use a big LiFe battery with dual power outlets, one for the Rx and the other for ignition.

Well I have problems with TD-SR10, no works on gas airplane, when I use gyro it get crazy my servos

What firmware version are you running in the TD-SR10.
If it's lower than V3.0.3 I would recommend to try V3.0.3 or higher.
This versions should have a a filter for engine-induced vibrations.
