frsky x9d + se 2019 switches

I have the above radio. Can the 2 or 3 positions switches be replaced with rotating switches? If so what is needed to do this? I'm using this radio for a surface boat that has several items that need to be moved with rotating servos.

I guess you mean a rotary 6 position switch. The old series Taranis had an uncommitted switch on the main board which many people used for a multirotor 6 flight modes. I am not sure if the Taranis X9D+ SE 2019 has this. This required some soldering and did not affect any of the other transmitter controls. The other option is to convert one of the two rotary pots to a multi position switch. The 6 position switch is available from FRsky, maybe Aloft has this as well.

So if I'm reading this right your saying I can only change any of the rotating switches not the 2 and 3 position switches. is that correct?

Hi Bruce. As far as I know the switches are configured as 2 and 3 position switches in the Opentx Transmitter hardware menu page. So as I understand it that the way it is.

If you want a 6-position switch which you still haven't confirmed then yes that has to replace a pot, can't be connected in place of a switch.

Guys, my name is Tom and I'm helping Bruce with his radio.
To answer your question, yes we have added a new 6 position switch as we needed another switch with more that 3 positions.
Here's what the new switch looks like:

According to Kilrah seems that we can't utilize a 3 position switch port to hook up this 6 position switch.
Given that Bruces radio is the newer FrySky Taranis X9D Plus and Nigel's is the older style X9D there are some differences.
When Kilran opened up this is what we're seeing: (The 3 pin port that he solders his leads into are in the upper left corner of the circuit board. Yellow circle)

On Bruce's newer radio this is the circuit board: (The 3 pin port that I think is the same is in a different location)

So our first question is the 3 pin port that is circled in yellow, is this the same port that Kilran uses on his radio and can we use this for hooking up our new 6 position switch?
Here's a closer view of it

Also is enabling this additional switch the same process as what Kilran did?

Can't thank you guys enough for all the helpful information on this radio.
Thanks,
Tom

Silly question, but what is the basic idea of the mixing you would like to accomplish? We may be able to share some creative ideas that will work. OpenTX really has some amazing power to do things that nothing else can do. For example, you can use a switch as a toggle. The logic statements can be very powerful. One switch can alter the functions of another switch, etc.

We are trying to operate water canons and the crane on My Dusseldorf fire boat and don't have enough rotating switches. we need to rotate the monitors (Canons) Life boat Crane and lift them. and raise and lower the anchor. so are you saying we can use a 3 position toggle switch to be able rotate one rotate switch for 3 differnt functions. Like select the crane and make it rotate, then select monitor and make it rotate? Thank you in advance the 3 monitors act as one. Crane would be used to lift the life boat and lower it into the water

Yes, you could use a 3 way switch as a selector and then use a gimbal for example to then control that item. A down a dirty example would be is the switch is in the down position, then the front monitor is the one you are controlling with the right hand gimbal. When the switch is in that position the monitor would snap to the position of the gimbal. Move the gimbal around and the monitor moves as you like.

Now an advanced programming method would be for the monitor to stay in the current position when the switch is activated, and only move to the left or right if the gimbal is moved to the left or right.. In other words, it does not snap to the current gimbal position. This is more work, but should be able to do it.

Super advanced - Lets take the front and rear monitor and control them together, right left, up and down via the gimbal, but lets add a slider to adjust the "focal point" of the water streams. Roll the slider one way, and the focal point is closer to the boat (monitors rotate towards one another), slide the other direction and the monitors rotate away from one another.

That is the amazing thing about these radios, it is only limited to your imagination, and some good old programming skills. :)

Let us know what you are wanting to do, and I think we all can help you with the programming to get there. But you have to promise to post up some video of the boating doing it all. :)

I remember a while back there was some guys that ran battleships that would fire projectiles at each others water lines until one of the boats sank. Some of these boats had 24 channels due to all of the guns they were controlling. They had some pretty cool mixing to get all of the guns to focus the weapons on the enemy. Your monitors are very much the same sort of thing. And OpenTX can make the running of the boat system much easier with some programming efforts. :)

There are some videos that will touch on some of the logic you will need to use, but not specifically for this application. Let us know what you would like to do and we should be able to assist.

@Bruce There are several ways to do this, but using Lua will provide the best results. I would want to know a few more details from you. First, when you want to move a cannon do you want it to be like a proportional control, like say your rudder, where as you move the stick the cannon follows it, or do you want something that responds to the control more like a switch, like when I hold the rudder stick to the left the cannon starts to rotate left, move the stick to the center and the cannon stops moving?

I have a Lua script that could be modified to handle either approach above and if you give me a few more details I would be happy to modify it for you.

Question, is it possible to replace one of the posds S1 or S2 (on the x9d 2019 Taranis) with a 6 position switch…Dont read that this is tried in the discussion abo…..

There is uncommitted switch input on the X9D+ for a 6 position switch. FRsky has such a switch which can be purchased.

Here is a how to link.

All a 3 position switch does is tie the center pin to either ground or Vcc. The center pin on a pot, called the wiper, rubs across a resistor with ground at one end and Vcc at the other. So with a pot turned all the way down the center pin is tied to ground, turn it all the up and the center pin is tied to Vcc... just like the 3 position switch. When rotating the wiper it slowly changes the voltage at the center pin from ground, 0 v, to 5v or whatever Vcc is.(3.3v ?) The only question is does the input circuit tied to the center pin have the capability to read a variable voltage, done with a circuit called a analog to digital converter (ADC) or not. It is easy enough to try. Just connect a pot, If I remember FrSky uses 2.4K short throw pots but a 5K pot will work as well. Connect the center pin of the pot where the center pin of the 3 position switch was and connect the other 2 pins to the same wires as the outer 2 pins on the switch. When testing with the servo you will either get a smooth rotation of the servo from one end to the other or the servo will start at one end and not follow pot rotation until at some point along the way it will jump to the other end.
Note: for your application a standard 370 degree rotation pot may be a better choice than a short 60 degree rotation pot.

John

All above is correct. The board level voltage around the main CPU is 3.3 volts. So to reconfigure a switch to a different function you need to set this in the system menu Hardware tab. Change the selected switch from 2 or 3 position to 6 position switch. You are done.
