FrSky repair facility

Normally a day or two depending on our workload that day, but with Covid, my Horus guy is only able to come in twice a week. Currently that is Monday and Friday. He tends to get everything done that collects the other days. Needless to say this means the turnaround sort of depends on what day your radio arrives. Also, just a warning, pack your radio well. Shipping is really bad right now, we see more abuse, and much slower shipping times. We still like USPS Priority mail the best, and FedEx ground is also pretty good without the price going crazy. UPS seems to have invested in their patented box crushing equipment and have it running in turbo mode lately.
Wayne , and just to be Clear this is to Update Firmware for FrOs system ONLY... NOT OpenTX and NOT to Convert to OPenTX...???

Just let us know what you would like. We can do it all. :) Also make sure we have your contact info with the radio.

They have a fantastic repair facility! I sent in my X10s-E and they got it back to me in 3 days

LOL - Must have been a fluke. We do our best to turn things quick, sometimes we are not this fast.

Hi, i have a Horus x10s. its running 2.2.4 opentx. has worked flawlessly for the past 2 years.
a couple of days ago, i was setting up my throttle linkage on a 50cc gasser and noticed, when i moved the elevater stick nothing happened.
so looked at the servo connections, receiver connections and everything was good. turned everything off and back on. still same result. checked connections again and reseated this time. still no elevator. so tried another plane and same result no elevator. when i looked at the monitor on the radio it showed elevator at 40 and 90 not moving and when i moved the stick nothing happened on the channel monitor. i took the back off to check the connections on the gimbal and board. everything looked good. checked that wires hadnt worn on gimbal. i did find a piece of dirt on the board, thought that might be it. cleaned it off and turned radio on and had elevator now. great, turned it off, put the back on. powered it back on, no elevator. i had to go back to my backup taranis.
what do i have going on here, board issue, gimbal issue?

Intermittent problems are an indication of a fractured wire or solder joint, also dirty/corroded connectors

You can also have a slipping pot on the gimbal.

If you have a VOM you can trace the issue.

But after a few years I strongly recommend replacing all gimbal leads as these wires are subject to fatigue.

what do you mean slipping pot? they are hall sensors, arent they? how does a pot slip?

OK, the proper term should have been slipping sensor. The idea is the same, the shaft to drive the magnet might be loose. This is the same thing as the wiper shaft of the pot slipping giving false positioning errors.

The sensor is held in place (indexed). If this is loose there will be movement (slippage) causing positioning errors.

But as you are indicating there is no change in the output, I'd look for a broken lead (solder joint or wire).

It would be best to send the radio for an annual service. I know this isn't done these days. But in the old days these was done to keep the RF deck aligned and to check for failing sensors (gimbal pots). Modern radios would still benefit from a regularly scheduled service.

does anyone in Canada service them or is Aloft the only service center in north america?
and what would an annual service cost?

My sons x7 with the hall gimbals had an issue where the aileron channel became slow sometimes. I would be flying one of his planes and the ailerons got funky so I landed. They looked fine upon landing. After much investigation, as I was thinking it was something mechanical with the servos or horns or ? I finally looked at the transmitter and what I saw was that the output didn't follow the stick (I can't find the video I took of it), but I would move the stick to the side and let it go back to center and the servo output would sometimes slowly return. I checked the wiring and it was fine, so I ended up just buying a new gimbal. That took care of it.

My radar for these sorts of issues goes straight to the wires from the gimbal. The wires can suffer fatigue failures, but the wires may look fine, but inside they are actually falling apart. This is more an issue with radios that have a lot of hours on them, and honestly is pretty darn rare these days. FrSky does use a nice quality wire in all of the radios these days as the early radios eventually showed this weakness and a better wire has been spec'd out since.

So, before you ship your radio anywhere there are a few things to try. First open up the radio and just look at these wires closely. As you move the gimbal you will see the wires that have the most movement in them. These are the prime suspects. Give them a close inspection. Now look at the connectors, unplug them, check that they are clean on the pins and the plugs, then reconnect. Retest and see if this cured anything. If it did, you probably just had a dirty plug connection and resetting it cleaned things up. I'd go back in and unplug once more and make sure everything looks clean.

If the radio came back to life with the above, it is a good idea to give it some bench testing time to make sure it is not going to come back in your next flight. I general I prefer to swap in a new gimbal and recalibrate just in case there is a wire in the early stages of failure, especially if we are talking about an elevator input!

Hi,

My X9lite died the other day when i turned it on. I had installed an aftermarket charger to charge though the USB port, see this thread for more info about the charge I installed.

https://forum.alofthobbies.com/index.php?threads/taranis-x9-lite.962/post-11639

I would like to send in the radio to get fixed. My question is should i remove that charger first or just send it in?

Thanks,

Hank

p.s. when i say died i mean it just has the audible "click" noise and the elipsies show up on the screen but nothing else happens.

Hmm, might as well leave it in place and better send us a link to what you have there as I know the guys are going to ask me what the heck is this thing?

Wayne,

Ok thanks i'll leave it in and i'll look for a link to the charger. Last time i looked Bangood didn't list it any more but i'll look again. Also do you need the batteries in it?

Thanks,

Hank

Can you install a FrSky XHT module into an ASce Micropro 8000 radio?
And if so, what would you charge?
Can I ship it to you?

Sorry, that is not something we offer. We try to stay within our comfort range, and your project may be very easy, or may require a load of investigation to get it working perfectly.

Good luck!
