FrSky Ethos - A new programming environment is coming!

Hey guys! If this has been addressed already, I apologize. I skimmed through but didn't see it:
Will the X20 support the IRX4 lite multi-protocol module? I'm currently running one in an X9 Lite for my M2 heli.

Chris

X20 support for third party products - I will suggest you contact the manufacturer and ask them if they have signed up with FrSky for third party support. FrSky is working with other companies and they have a link somewhere on their site for them to get established. It would be a great idea for them to do so. We have sent a few of our manufacturers to do exactly this. At initial release I don't know if we will see much if any third party support, but given sometime we should see that support get added in. Right now their focus will be covering their bases with the least amount of extra headaches.

Thanks Wayne! I would like to think that iRangeX has already done that. Their module will physically fit, but of course that's only half the battle. :)

Chris

HD will be about $599 and the ETA is listed as May. I'd like to test this unit before we offer it. It is a totally new thing for FrSky.

Wayne will this model come with a HD aircraft transmitter module as well. Do you know what format of video input or camera types will be supported.

Is the built in video portion very important? I’m not into drones yet but was thinking of going all in on a HD unit if that truly is a great feature And start building a quad.

its been pretty quiet on the HD front. Is the drone community excited?

Not sure, if I read it or not in this thread.
Can the X20 be rolled back to run OpenTX if Ethos is not my cup of tea?
No. There is no "roll back" - it was designed from the ground up to be its own thing. Would be as difficult to install OpenTX on it as it would be to install OpenTX on a Spektrum or Futaba radio.

Excited? No. Aware? Also no. The DJI Digital system is extremely popular right now - popular to the point where they routed out Fatshark, the leading company for about 7 years, in around 6 months. They've been improving and releasing new systems every two or three months, and I don't see FrSky matching that, during release or basic support/development.

Their best bet would be to make it compatible with the DJI system, but DJI has taken to silencing people (lawsuits, copyright, I'm not sure) who have made products that threaten their total control over their ecosystem. (There are no third party receivers, goggles, or cameras). They basically want to ensure that if people want to continue using this system, their only option will be to buy from DJI. Where this leaves FrSky, well, I guess that's up to your personal opinion.

To be honest, I don't see it going anywhere. Doesn't help that they have released next to no information on the system so far.

i would be happy with a video in option on the controller so i could show my analog or dji footage on the controller for bystanders to see what i am seeing. The only company i have seen so far that is allowed to make dji compatible hd stuff is caddx and has been super popular. The fatshark "hd" stuff to me doesnt look like hd, dji just blew them out of the water with quality and the fact that you can have 8 people in the air at once is pretty amazing too. Oh and unlike fatshark no HAM license required at all for dji stuff.

Well... technically you don't need a HAM license - but the instant you unlock the firmware to blast out 1.2 Watts, that becomes pretty irrelevant as it's blatantly non FCC-compliant.

If they made an HDMI in or the likes, I can see it having some purpose as you said. I would be very tempted if I could use it as a receiver for a DJI transmitter and then output the video to my Fatshark goggles.

The Caddex was a licensed product by DJI, so no one has pulled a fast one on them yet... or, in this case, a 'fast one' is creating a competitive and balanced market without price gouging.

Fatshark's system was a pretty big flop - they had done slow development for years, and once DJI released, they quickly rushed it to production to have a chance at digital FPV, and it shows. The performance of the system is outright terrible compared to DJI. It may take a few years to come to maturity, if the company can survive that long.

My next rookie question...

what does the wireless audio feature do? Is that just to play music from your phone through the x20 speaker?

thanks.

You can play voice announcements through wireless (Bluetooth) earphones - or, what's probably more important, through Bluetooth-enabled hearing aids

I believe that is the intention for the Bluetooth audio option. Be aware not all Bluetooth hearing aids have an open Bluetooth streaming capability. I have Oticon hearing aids and they have a propriety Bluetooth system which requires the Oticon audio streamer and so are not able to pair with non Oticon devices.

Hi, I've been using the DJI fpv system almost exclusively since it's release and half my quad fleet uses the Caddx Vista camera and air unit, so DJI has allowed 3rd parties within their ecosystem. I still doubt the Frsky HDwill be DJI compatible, I rather see them cooking their own stuff.

Cole, can you please reformat your post. Many of those lines are taken out of context.

Ethos is proving to have high functionality, even this early in its development and customer roll out.

All the best,

Konrad
