FrSky Access Inquiry

I wanted to share an email question we received recently as we get this one from time to time:

________
I've been out of the radio game for a while now and I've learned that FrSky has ditched the D8 protocol and is moving to D16 and their new ACCESS. Half of my receivers are D8 protocol and I'm worried that all of my older receivers are obsolete now to FrSky's future.

I've heard that we can update the firmware on the new FrSky radios and/or the internal Tx module to enable D8, but I'm not sure of the exact process. Also it seems some say it's possible and other say it isn't possible.

1. Can you help me determine if something like your 'FrSky Taranis Plus ACCESS SE' can be upgraded to run the older D8 protocol?

2. Do you have any intel on FrSky's future? Will D16 be phased out as well?

3. Are there any Taranis or other FrSky radio coming down the line that may have the D8 protocol enabled?
_________

You can't get D8 on the internal module of the radio, but you can plug in an XJT to the back module bay to add D8. Easy and cheap, best of all no firmware to mess with. :)
or the lite version:

FrSky actually stopped development of D8 back with the Taranis came out. The X series came out at that same time, and they had focused on it all of these years. They continued to sell V and D8 receivers, but nothing new was developed. The sales on the D8 stuff had all but stopped in the last couple of years. The newer D16 (X series) was so much better and had more features that even the die hard D8 guys switched over. Now we have ACCESS and the new Archer line is just starting to be released.

By adding an XJT module in the back of a new ACCESS radio, you can use all of the FrSky D, V, X, G, S and R receivers as well as the new Archer line as it comes online. That is a lot of options.

Hope this helps.

You are correct sir. The Original V series is so old that Aloft never sold any. There are a few out there though.
