Forum software updates...

Hi all.. Some of you that have been around here a while might remember me doing the occasional forum s/w update/upgrade. Well.. I've been away for about 2.5 years since I last did that and now's the time. We're going to leap forward into the future with a pretty hefty update to the forum s/w. I was speaking with Wayne (my brother) and I'm in the process of looking into all the things that need to be accomplished to not only do the upgrade but also the just ensure everything is backed up and so forth before any changes are made. I'm hoping this will be a smooth road from old to new but you never know till you're in the fire a bit.

I will try my best to do this when there are not too many people on the system but it's rather hit-or-miss with these things. So, if you get a message from the forum that it's down for maintenance, that would be me.. I'll try my best to keep the downtime to a minimum and not break anything..

In the meantime I wish all of you a Happy New Year wherever you might be at this moment!

If you have any questions feel free to ask and I'll do my best to answer!

ps. Is anyone still using Tapatalk here? I used to update their software occasionally here but need to look into just how old the existing is, etc..

Thanks for working on it. With tapetalk, i had not even heard of it until the forum asked me about it. Never used it myself.

Think very few people use Tapatalk. Konrad was the main user of it. It is handy for those that use different forums a lot.

Reading up on some of the improvements for the latest updates. Currently, I think the editor here on our forums is the best I have seen for any forum, but they have put a ton of work into a new one that really sounds great. It will look similar and function similarly, but can do so much more. That will be fun.

Sounds like the Search is much better too.

Just a heads up we are going to be switching over the forum to the new server very soon. We have a little DNS issue to figure out and should be switching after that.

Yeah - Sorry. We tried to get the switch to happen last night but we made some errors. Will try again tonight. I have a ton of little DNS stuff to sort through and update to make it work correctly. We do this just often enough to fully forget how to do it all. LOL

Well, that did not work. LOL

We made the switch to the new server, and the site was working, couple of little things to sort out, then I noticed that we had no company emails. So trying to wrap my head around that now. Probably something rather simple. DNS is a rather confusing thing when you only mess with it on the rare occasion.

Just a heads up, once this is done you will probably need to clear your cookies from alofthobbies.com to get the site to load correctly. I'll see if there is a work around for that. Only needed for the forum.

Probably not going to switch over for a day or three as we are actually moving to a bigger server to allow a greatly improved search function in the forum.

Same here, forum and store both working fine for me, with no fiddling on my end. Firefox, Windoze 7.

The store should be untouched with this change over. I'm told that when we switch over to the new server for the forum, once DNS is fully switched it should also be invisible. But in our testing so far that has not been the case.

For those that do not know, DNS is the one of those magic things that makes the internet work. Think of it as a map, it directs the internet traffic to the correct servers, but it tells systems some things about the services happening there. It can get complex with traffic going in many different directions, and describing those directions and backup options should the first route not work. I have a basic understanding, certainly not an expert with it all.

In the end I expect to have some nicely improved services and this forum will be fully updated and working in top form. I'd say the forum is closer to 50% right now.

We are currently on the old forum server. The new server has some upgrades going into it.

I'll try to post up here before we make the switch. Should you have any issues when we switch to the new forum, please email us at contact@alofthobbies.com We will probably send out an email blast when the new system goes live and has been fully confirmed.

OK - Think we have things figured out.. Got to wait 48 hours before the next attempt.

Should be going for our DNS smap late tonight. So in the morning you may see a few changes. If the site gives an error about not loading, then you may need to clear your browser data for alofthobbies.com I'm told we should be able to avoid this once DNS is fully propagated... We shall see.

If you run into issues you can email us at contact@alofthobbies.com for possible updates.

I have had a carbon falcon years ago. Loved it. Do you sell an ARF with everything included? Except tx.
