Foam Cutting

This section is intended to discuss foam and foam cutting. Primarily the Windy Hills Hobbies CNC hot wire machines.

If you need replacement parts for your machine, post up, we should be able to supply these pretty soon.

I'm guessing this is for DIY foam cutting, but do you know of any company offering that service? There's one in CO that I know of, but sourcing 1.9# EPP is challenging. Will Aloft offer foam sheets for sale?

No plans to stock foam at this time. We may stock some Depron in the future, but shipping it is a pain. We may well offer cut Depron kits in the future, that is easier to ship.

You can get EPS foam at the local hardware stores. It is usually pink or light blue and cuts really well. For EPP, it is more of a challenge to source decent foam. That might be a good new topic.

I have discussed foam sourcing with s number of folks. Seems many folks have a "honey pot" of foam they have been using for years, but also sounds like most folks are starting to run low. These are folks that I know are actively building or kiting with cut foam.

I have some pictures of the newest model I was working on i was able to make a great wire management. It looks nice and clean ALMOST NO SOLDERING REQUIRED

i actually dont use the limit switches at all. The devwing cam software has the soft limits set in the settings and i have never had a problem with it. If i was building one again i wouldnt put the time/money into installing them. Love how simple the plywood is, if you dont sell it as i kit i think i may design up some of my own.

I have been wanting to reconfigure my table shape. I have more of a square cutting area which limits the max angle i can cut (sweep) to around 30-40 degrees i think? I would like to have more of a rectangle shape so i can get more extreme angles between the two towers.

I use the home feature as well but i have have it saved where i told it to be. I have found that it remembers where it is in 3d space even if you forget to home it and turn the machine off. Turn it back on, hit the home and it goes right to where i told it to go.

I use optical limit switches on my laser cutter. While I haven’t used it a lot they have worked really well and were not difficult to install.

Just now looking back at the pictures you posted @RafaelAvila . I hadn't realized that the two towers were separate pieces that you can adjust how far apart they are. I definitely need that in my next setup for more extreme sweep. Right now my towers are locked into a piece of mdf that i cant adjust.

Yes, it is handy for them to be able to be moved apart or together depending on the sweep or span one needs to cut. It is a good idea to have 2 or three positions they can be locked into so software changes are easier. Something like a dowel pin that locks the position on the table would be a good approach.
