@Wayne you guys think you'll have your units available for sunset. At least like to have one I can keep in my pocket or if I feel like putting it on a plane .... maybe
Forgot to log in and above message was repeated here. GPS telemetry would actually make the module useful to the user. I doubt these things will actually be of much for their intended purpose due to their short bluetooth range and the fact that there would seem to be little interest in actually monitoring the location of model aircraft on the part of the FAA or LEO who presumable have a lot more important things to do. Like making sure doors and wheels don't fall off real aircraft and keeping drunken and impaired drivers off the roads.

FrSky just released their remote ID module, it has built-in GPS with full telemetry integration. Only weights 8 grams, 20x36mm and is possibly the most reasonably priced of the current offerings. It is listed for $50 at Horus but no stock yet. Looks pretty sweet to be compliant and could be used as a lost plane locator with the LoRa link!
I just purchased the FrSKY FrID and the STK tool- they do have them in stock now. But they only provide PC software to set it up, and not Mac. Does any one have a way to set this up on a Mac?
and
does one realy need to use the STK tool- ie- can one just plug the FrID into the battery and be legal? If so which number is reported to the FAA? None of the numbers on the unit are recognized by the FAA site- they want a serial #.
We have them here at Aloft, just not up on the site yet.
Yes, you can just power them up and they are ready to go. Use an app like "Drone Scanner" and you will see it pop up on the map. They start reporting right away, but will only add map data after they have found enough GPS signals to do so. You will see your serial number in the app. Also, there is a sticker on the back of the package, pretty sure that is the serial number. Not able to confirm that right now.
In testing seemed to be working very well.
p.s. - For others out there, these will need to be registered with the FAA, and they will need the serial number for that process. This is the process for all Remote ID units.
thanks- yes the Drone scanner worked and was needed to retrieve the serial # as this was not anywhere on the Horus packaging, or on the module itself. Odd the serial number was nowhere to be found except through Drone scanner. Unit fits just fine in even a Magnus, and seems to work just fine.
