FAA's new Remote ID and our glider sites!

I know they no longer cover Davenport by choice.

I was surprised Torrey Pines had a FRIA and it is not the beach slope we all know. I do understand that many clubs in San Diego were initially denied but on appeal many were awarded a FRIA. Does not look like all of the FRIA for San Diego are on this map yet.

Could this be implemented by a module on your transmitter instead of on the aircraft ? That would solve a lot of problems. How far is it supposed to transmit? My radio doesn't go that far so what is the minimum limit they require?

Nope needs to be from the aircraft. It is transmitting the current location of the model and that can be shown on a map. The one plus side is you can have a little flight log from some of the apps.
 
Well the other plus side is if you slope soar over terrain with vegetation and lose your glider. The RID should help you find it.
Any ETA on when the Aloft RID modules will be available and pricing? I'd like to get a pre-order set up.
 
Yes, parking is an issue for sure. Sit and wait for a spot or park down the hill and walk back up to the parking lot, then hike up. But when it is good up there, there is nothing like it! Fantastic flying!! Great thermals and once you hook up, you can sky out easily even with these 4m ships. Great dynamic range of flying, you can fly all around you. WInd has to be from NW and it is a picky site. You think it will bee good and then it is not, sometimes you think it will be ok, then it is great. It is a much harder hike than Coyote. It is really fun to turn around and face uphill and fly your plane up and higher than the hill and then come screaming down past yourself. :)
 
Anybody read up on the FAA Reauthorization Act of 2023? Not sure what affect it will have on us.
I think the best thing to do is not do anything and not worry aboiut it until it starts getting patrolled. That is just my opinion. I tried to re-register for the FAA number, but they wanted me to list every one of my planes and the name and model of each one. I stopped there. I have wat too many to do that. LOL.

As fas as the plane ID, again, Ill wait until I am told by a Ranger, or whomever, that I need one to fly at that location. If and when this happens, I will most likely just not fly at that location any longer. I can see having the plane ID on powered planes, I get that, because you can have FPV and fly miles and miles away from line of site, I do not get slope flying planes needing this. I see them patrolling the powered flying fields more so that slope flying sites. What we really need is a thin remote ID that we can velcro to the plane where ever we like so we only need one. :) Or even better and app we can put on our phone that transmits that we are flying in this area as a warning to air traffic. So easy that way.

The idea was you could have a single broadcast unit that you just moved from model to model. So you could have 10 airframes but just one or two registered broadcast units that move from model to model when it's time to fly.

This of course does not address the issue of models where the broadcast unit is hard to get to or not easily swapped out.

Excactly, and I have lots of those models that everything has to be packed in just right to get the CG correct and if you take it out, everything shifts and then back to the balancer. UGH. LOL
 
Yeah, no bueno. I may have to dispense with the ballast tube from the Speedo in order to get a module in there.

New builds not so much a problem as we can build/design with this in mind. Vintage designs will tend to benefit from being designed when rc gear was big and bulky. Futaba appears to have a lower profile unit but it’s even pricier. Mounting in a wing bay might be a less cg affecting option but still lots of needless hassles
 
I think they just had to lump us (slope flyers) in with the powered croud and make us do the same even though we are very very low on the issue for air traffic. I highly doubt I will see a Amazon or FedEx quad flying by us at Coyote. LOL. Funny how the most important objects in the air (humans) do not have to have one of these broadcaster units on them when they decide to fly paragliders, hangliders, etc. I would think air traffic would be more worried about hitting a person, then a RC plane.

I may carefully measure out 250 grams of ballast and put it in a plastic bag to be placed on top of gliders in case a gust of wind tries to flip them over. If anyone asks about my gliders I'll be able to honestly tell them they are under 250 grams.
