Well, I think it safe to say he has already updated the receivers firmware if he was able to bind.
He may have given us the wrong names of the receivers, this is pretty common since FrSky has so many similar names. For example he is calling these receivers Archers, not the case for those names.
Since you were able to bind to the receivers, I will assume the firmwares are compatible. On to the next issue.
Had poor control in flight. - Did the radio speak to you? Typically, these radios will tell you if there is a problem. It will say something like telemetry lost, RSSI low or similar. This is a huge warning that things are not going well, you need to land ASAP and figure it out.
Did you set a failsafe condition? This tells the receiver a set of commands to follow should the connection be lost. Lots of options here. It is pretty rare to drop into failsafe with FrSky gear.
You will not get erratic control from a FrSky radio or most any 2.4 system for that matter. It is just not how the radios work. So you either had some sort of issue in the plane, or an issue with the setup. Be that programming, something mechanical, bad CG, power cutting out (system would have voiced a warning if it was more than about a second). You get the general idea.
Best to study the setups and see if you can figure anything out. A range check is always a good idea.
Also, there is data logging that can be turned on in the model settings in the transmitter that may help to shed some light on what was going on. A good idea to log your voltages in the plane if possible.
