DXF Output - Wing Plan Suggestions

Hi Alex,

Someday when you are bored, I was hoping for some minor changes to your wing plan that is in the DXF output file. I use this output for creating a complete plan and for plotting out to create something to build on without tiling a bunch of printer paper. Here's what I have noticed.

1. Spars are broken down by the ribs into many smaller pieces. Could they be just one large piece like the rib combs?
2. The Aileron Closing Walls are not on the wing plan in the dxf output. I don't think they are on the print either. Could those get added in? I like to use rather thick (1/4 in) walls for hinging.

Thanks,
Steve

Here's a picture of me plotting the dxf output plan on my CNC machine for a building plan. Notice the leading edge spar is in pieces. (All spars are this way)

Hello Steve,

sorry for the late reply, I just saw your message.

If you are talking about the spar on the planform (overall wing view): I'm afraid the way these are drawn will make it a bit hard to make them in one piece. However, they should also be available in the part of the DXF output which is below the wing plan, right? Can you maybe copy & paste them onto the wing?

And about the closing walls: I'll take a look into it, thanks for the info!

Cheers, alex.

Hi,

I checked it now - indeed, the spars on the plan are drawn in segments. That might prove to be tricky to change, bacause for some spars, it is actually correct to draw them like that. I'll put this wish on my TODO list, but I can't promise you.

About the closing walls for the ailerons: you are right, they are not at all on the plan, because (again) they would be rather tricky to place there correctly. The ribs and the half-ribs are also not shown on the plan as such - that would rather complicate the creation of the plan. The closing walls (combs) are shown below though, under the ribs, where all the spars are.

I hope this helps!

Cheers, alex.

Hi Alex, I've attached the WingHelper file I was talking about. You are correct that these are not a big deal and not a problem if they are too much to implement. Interestingly, the aileron closing walls look right in the 3D view and are not shown in any of the 2D output plan files (dxf or printing).

Hello Steve,

I forgot to mention, this is one genius simulation of the wing tips! Is it OK with you if I post these pics on the Wing Helper pages (the main Web site and the FB page)?

You are right, these elements are correctly shown in 3D - but that's for the strange reason that a 3D view is actually much easier to generate than a 2D plan. :)

Cheers, alex.
