Dualsky FC151 limitation?

Minimoa-2

I've used the FC151 many times, with good success, after spending at least an hour each time identifying connectors that were placed upside down, misinterpreting the brown/orange/yellow color coded wires (why didn't they choose primary colors like red, blue, and yellow?). But that's not why I'm posting this. I have a new problem. Not a problem really, but a sub-optimal setup.

I am using a Frsky R4 4-channel receiver with an elevator/rudder only park flyer model (Electric Kitten). I was going to hook up the aileron channel (ch. 4 on my set-up) to my rudder, and leave channel 1 (rudder on my set-up) free to use the mode switch with my FC151. Sure, the FC151 instructions say to use channel 5 for this, but I thought this was because they assumed you'd be using rudder/elevator/ailerons/throttle and would need channel 5. I mean, if you substituted channel 1 as channel 5, why would Dualsky care?

It didn't work for me. I always get the dreaded red light "no connection" signal with this setup. By hooking up channel 1 as rudder I can get it to work in default auto level mode, but I can't change the mode in flight since mode is not connected.

By the way, I also tried setting my receiver so that channel 1 was changed to channel 5, but Dualsky doesn't seem to like that either. It seems that the rudder wire always has to be connected; i.e. you can't leave it dangling and then connect the mode switch instead.

Has anyone out there tried to use a channel other than 5 for the mode switch, and, if so, was it successful? How did you do it?

Thanks,
Minimoa
