DLG Alternative

Is there an alternative method of launching a DLG? At my age I am afraid of spinning around.

I think I would like to try DLG. As a young man I used to do a lot of Hand Launch glider flying.

A couple ways I can think of. If you don't want to spin, a small bungee hi start can get you 1-200' which is plenty to hunt thermals. There is always the old school javelin style launch, and many can be electrified as well.

Thanks Guys, But more often than not, I find my self alone when out glider flying.

I only know one other person in the area flying gliders, and due to his personality,
I avoid being any where he is.

Where are you located? DLG's are some of the best all around gliders on the planet, you'll love it.

I thought the electric DLG market would be pretty darn big, but seems to stay rather small. With the high prices of DLG, not many young pilots invest in them, and when we are older and can afford these toys our bodies are not in their best condition anymore. It is an evil little trick!

Since the electric DLG does not need to deal with the stress of launch, the airframe can be made lighter, and the small electric gear needed can get very light, so less weight penalty than you might think.

Wayne,
Do you have any specific examples of an electric DLG you could recommend. Mine are so small in the servo area that getting a motor and speed control and even slightly larger battery installed would be impossible.
When I first saw Hoquiam’s post, I humorously thought of a repurposed trap shooters clay pigeon launcher. Maybe some bright minds on the forum could design something like this. I had to have my dominant hand wrist surgically frozen to repair a skiing injury several years ago and struggle to get 50 foot launches anymore, not to mention getting easily off balance with trying to launch my DLGs.

If you like I can probably get you one of these:

This is the electric (F5K) version of the Falcon. The same builder as our 1 meter DLGs and the larger JOY. It is not just a different fuselage, he refined the structures of the plane for many many months before locking in on his final design. I was following the development for a good while as I was eager to get them and he refused to sell them until he figured out the right formula. :)

Wayne,
Thanks for the prompt reply! I would like two of these with the recommended servos and electric power package. Let me know as soon as you have them and I will send payment.
Thanks

Wayne,
Attached is my preferred configuration and color scheme can be the same or different.
Thanks,

You can throw it off the slope. Or, like others have pointed it out, you can launch it with hi-start, or with a catapult. You can put a motor on it.

Also, there are many larger and cheaper gliders if you don't have to hurl it up by hand.

Thanks Guys,

But it seems that if I do not launch it discus style, then I have defeated the whole concept of DLG!
I might as well just use my existing gliders. Would a DLG give me something that I can't do with
them?

I was hoping to see if some one had tried to use a devise, sort of like a sling, that you twirled around your
head and then released it.

Tom, maybe you are thinking about something like an ATLATL ?

Depending on what you are flying now, a DLG may be a large step up in performance. They are very efficient!
