Digitizer probe

One of the CNC challenges for me is getting a digitized part into the system for replication/modification. One option is 3D scanners, which are either expensive or don't work well.

Has anyone tried a digitizer probe? I am running LinuxCNC on a PrintNC machine.

I am seeing people using the spendy 3D scanners on youtube and the output looks rather horrible. But they seem to make it all work. I have seen similar that are smart phone based. Even worse.

Probe might make good sense. Have to wonder if there is a nice opensource version we can afford for the hobby?

There is an OS option for a scanner, but it is small.
