Delta Project - Whiplash!

Thought it was time to show off a fun little project we have been playing with. I think it is pretty close to kit form, already flown and not many changes for final production.

Normally we share the builds as we are going, but this one was a little different. It has been a nice distraction for me as I'm going through some family issues at home. This model is not yet named, and we flew her in a rather bare state as we had a lot of estimated guesses on this one. Hey, its my first Delta.

I just wanted something fun, and this is the result. She is fun!

She started off like this:

Changed to this with a 3D printed canopy:

And that one was built in balsa and she let me know that she wanted to look like this to make CG:

We are using a soft rubber nose for her. And it came in handy while we worked out the actual CG. :)

Here is the prototype of this version:

Test flights yesterday went better than I expected. Once we dialed in the CG she was a nice flying model. I expected she might need more vertical area, but seems fine as is. I also feared my elevons area was going to be too small, but again all seems good. We were flying with our 2S Gentle Lady setup, but some dummy(me) grabbed the wrong prop and we ended up with a hot motor. My bad. She was happily cruising at an estimated 50 or 60 mph and very quiet.

So what is one to do? Well, lets up the motor! Now a bigger motor on 4S battery and propped for 120mph and 2:1 thrust. Should make some noise now.

She weighs about 180 grams AUW.

Looking for a good name for her, and curious on your thoughts on this project. She is a super easy build.

After playing with moving some things around, looks like a major overhaul for the fuselage is in order. Not the end of the world. Allows me to fix some issues that will make the plane more enjoyable to build. It will look about the same.

We flew the prototype today with a pitot to see what the airspeed was. Pitot says 80mph.

Jaron has calculated that we can run this motor on 6S, so I'm sure he will be doing that. Looks like we have battery room.

The new design is coming together. I have spent a good amount of time on the rear.

My dog is telling me it is time to go home.. See ya..

We used an old EagleTree airspeed logger. It takes your highest airspeed per flight and flashes it on a single digit display. I thought we were doing at least 100 MPH but 80 is still very good.

Blink your eye, lose the orientation and its gone! Next thing you know the neighbors have called the police reporting the attack of Iranian drones has begun

The delta is really stable and predictable with the correct CG. That was one of the reasons I wanted to play with a delta wing. Throttle back and this thing is a park flyer. Even in the wood finish she is pretty easy to keep an eye on her.

I have some more video to edit and it will show how soft the landings are.

That is why Aloft Hobbies's test pilot is an alien XD. Also I did notice the shape is sort of like a certain Iranian drone lol

In other news, we got it to 90 MPH! A new record! Soon to be broken on 6s. That’s right, the setup we’ve engineered is good up to 6S without even changing the prop, but we need to keep the motor cool for the sake of the 3D printed motor mount. We’re working on getting more airflow to the motor for this.

Simple - Ill add some quick little NACA inlets for cooling - What a pain this turned into! They are accurate backdumping NACAs though.

Rafael reports he does not like my motor mount.

Not easy to produce. o_O (I knew this as it was coming together, but he has pulled off some small miracles.)
