Convert Tandem X20 sticks mode 2 to mode 1

My new Tandem X20 arrived a week ago from China (Aloft is still out of stock). First impression is very favorable, however it arrived with the default mode2 sticks. To change to mode1, I used the instructions from jet_flyer on post 5785 on

https://www.rcgroups.com/forums/sho...S-X20HD-Tandem-and-ETHOS/page386#post46983165

"1. In Sticks screen change mode.
2. Disconnect battery
3. Remove four screws holding case back and remove back. The 900m antenna is located in the case handle so just rotate case away from gimbals without removing 900m antennal coax connection.
4. Mode hardware change. Remove the machine screw holding the existing throttle centering arm up and move to other gimbal. Back off brake and ratchet adjustment.
5. On new throttle, adjust ratchet and brake adjustment as desired.
6. Replace case back being careful that the 900m coax is positioned away from gimbals and connect battery."

and also the video from Frsky on

There is no video for the Tandem so I used the Horus one.

I found the procedure difficult, as 3 steps are missing in the above:

1. to open the case with more than 1 cm gap, the side sliders may slide out, or have to be slid out from their positions; if they are disorientated in any way when replaced the case will not close.

2. Once the sliders are loose, the case can be rotated away as noted above, however constant attention is required to avoid tugging on the fine 900m antenna wire running from the handle to the main board.

3. Replacing the machine screw in the left gimbal centering arm was difficult, as I tried it with the screw orientated with the head facing inwards, the way it was in the right centering arm. Three times the screw dropped in the tx, and I had to invert the tx and shake it to get it out, while not tugging on the antenna wire. Eventually I replaced the screw in the left gimbal with the head facing outwards, which worked.

When I finished, I found the right (throttle) stick was fine, but the left (elevator) stick had a problem with centering; after an up or down control, not centering on the exact center, and being soggy near the mid point. If I move elevator up and let go, the position of the elevator is shown on the Tandem model/mixer/elevator screen, not properly centered (photo attached). I have gone back in and re-checked and re-adjusted the ratchet and brake bands, with all pressure eased, without solving it. I did a few flights, and the elevator is a problem.

Here is my diagnosis. In the Tandem the default is mode 2, which means when you convert to mode 1 the spring for the elevator centering has been pre-stretched. In my tx, this spring is now unserviceable. I have some old gimbals and I am thinking of recycling a spring to replace the spring in my Tandem. I would appreciate any advice on this procedure, after removing a spring, is it tricky to install a spring? Is there a replacement gimbal available for the Tandem?

The problem has been solved. The Horusrc support initially suggested a spring replacement but later suggested that the spring tension for the mode 1 elevator movement be adjusted. Although I have owned a taranis and qx7 and replaced gimbals etc I did not know the spring tension can be controlled for each function.
I found a video:

which shows spring tension being adjusted on a qx7s. I then located the correct screw on the Tandem gimbal (marked with star in photo) and luckily I had a 1.5mm hex screwdriver on hand to adjust the tension. The tension had been fully reduced, for the mode 2 setup, and increasing it was simple.
