Control Line models.

Yeah I know...But its how I started when I didn't have a pot to piss in and I still love it.

Anyway here is a new project I'm messing about with. Its a British "Weatherman" Class V-VI-VII photo speed model, similar to the USA "Perky" Class. The idea is just go as fast as you can from the getgo, but with a lot of vintage rules. Except the engines...hehehe.

Its good to go back to your roots and chop up a bit of balsa from time to time...trouble is you cant prevent a little technology creeping in!

Anyway this one is different because it has a glass fuselage and a carbon U/C.

Hope you like it.

Couple more pics.

Love the hardened perimeter surfaces!

Wow a K&B 6.5cc Lee custom. These are like hen's teeth. Clarence Lee Custom engine benefited from the adding of Perry Directional Porting (PDP) to the old Veco and K&B 40 and 61 pumped engine. The schnuerle engines didn't use this porting configuration. But any Lee Custom blue printed engine seemed to run more consistently.

I think only Lee (not K&B), Super Tigre and HB bought the license for the PDP.

Edit: I lost the original post. (I know I know, no great loss)

I just came back from running a few Nelson 15s Cox Conquest 15, and Jett 426 and 428 40 (6.5cc) pylon engine. Man have I lost the ability to needle an engine! Ok, it is coming back. It is like riding a bike. You never really loose to basic idea, but the nuances that's the trick.

My old racing partner is just shaking his head when he sees me trying to tune (needle) his engines.

Really love the "new" Tetra bladder tanks. No air in the lines!

All the best,

Konrad

Wow...nelson and Cox conquest 15's...I'm always trying to find those. No success yet.

I do have a GMA Rossi .15 though.

I am still not to bad at needling if the UK nationals 2 years ago is anything to go by.

Fun!

Doc.

Thanks Wayne - still got a few of the old skills, and enjoying it so much makes it so rewarding - especially if its your own take on an old story as in this case.

While I've had some success with the FAI F3D RC pylon engine, I've always loved the 2.5cc and 3.5cc class engine.
There is someing about an engine spinning 30K to 40k+ rpms that sounds like a siren's call.

The industrial "weed wacker" engine song, sounds too much like lawn chores.

Thats Paul Eisner - an old friend indeed. Last time I saw him was at the British nationals in 2019.

Totally agree on the engine sound. For Pylon the nearest is probably an MB engine...woohoo! I know Robbie Metkemeyer very well too.

Just love it - a much as I like the screech of a good glider pass.

Cheers,

Doc.

Yep, we engine men almost never get the credit in the press. In the video the guy getting the engine to run needs to be given some of the credit. There is all sorts of stuff going on before the engine will run unassisted. Then there is problem of getting the engine on the pipe. Did I say how much I like that video?

I had an Irvine 15R and learned a lot about pipe back pressure from it. I was surprised that back then one could get this kind of performance engine core from a regular retailer. I got mine from Tower Hobbies. Core, as in there is no such thing as a stock engine at these performance levels.

I sold it. I'm always sorry when I sell one of my engines. I never remember the dollars I got in exchange. Now trading or giving away an engine to an actual user actually is much more satisfying/rewarding

Could you let me know if you see any hot .15 engines for ale Konrad?

Thanks!

Doc.

wow James - such an awesome build - I too flew a simple control line when I was a lad - nothing as extreme are you guys, but I remember it fondly!

Its a bit topical Phil because the glass moulding is exactly what you are doing right now too. The only real difference is that yours are all computer generated where mine were all carved by hand.

Cheers,

Doc.
