Considering upgrade to a 10S - Thoughts?

I'm hoping to get some thoughts on an upgrade I'm considering to a 10S radio.

I currently have an original Taranis (not a Plus). I've kept the radio up to date with all S/W revisions, and new M9 gimbals. Through the years I've also replaced various parts such as the antenna, switches, and LCD to keep the radio in perfect operation, so currently the radio works great.

I mainly fly fixed wing aircraft, although I'm considering going into Helis. I'd love to fly FPV drones but unfortunately I've tried and get motion sickness so I won't be doing that. Most of my programming has been basic, with some mixes added in. My most complicated model has 9 channels.

So, do I need a new radio? NO, but I like the look and features of the 10S. I like the better screen. I like the idea of having a back up radio.

Please share your thoughts -
- Is a 10S something you think would be a good purchase?
- Will I be disappointed because for my use there isn't much difference?
- Is the feel and weight an issue?
- Will I be able to easily transfer all my models over (I'm obviously using Open TX)?
- Any other thoughts or benefits I should consider?

Like you said you don't need the upgrade.

Please share your thoughts -
- Is a 10S something you think would be a good purchase? YES!!
- Will I be disappointed because for my use there isn't much difference? No, You will love the interface (feel)
- Is the feel and weight an issue? Not unless you are back packing
- Will I be able to easily transfer all my models over (I'm obviously using Open TX)? YES!
- Any other thoughts or benefits I should consider? The anttenas are better. As I recall the 10S has diversity antennas, Get the 10S! I would have gotten a 10S to upgrade my X9D plus if I hadn't seen the X9E. I like the tray radio and had been missing my Multiplex Proffi 4000. The 10S still pulls at my wallet whenever I see one!

Objectively or subjectively, it is a wonderful radio. I sold my model a Taranis, my 12s sits in its case and I fly with the 10s almost daily. Fros for me!

You like Fros that much? If I get the 10S is it worth converting my planes to Fros?

I started with open tx and loved it. Fros is easy, intuitive and powerful. I’m no slouch, I’ve got decades of experience in turbines and I’m an ATP so complex has its place, but so does simple.

Is it easy to convert from Open TX to Fros? Do you loose much or any capabilities? I have about 20 models programmed even though I currently only have 7 planes.

I also have an Orange Spectrum DSMX/2 module, I'm assuming that will work on the 10S?

I’m aircraft only, single engine and twin. You must rebind and reprogram each, but the returns are simplicity and a well integrated interface. I can’t help you with the module.

Everything I've read or viewed seem to have instructions on how to flash the radio using a Windows PC, are there any instructions/videos if I'm trying to do this with a MAC?

My 2c about the motion sickness is that you can help get used to this by watching fpv videos. I have noticed with flying quads and playing First person shooter games that your eyes get used to it after a while, but if you stop doing it, when you come back it takes a while for that to wear off again. You could get a simulator like Liftoff and play with the field of view, slowing increasing the FOV until you get to a normal fpv camera.

For anyone else using a MAC I figured out a couple things:

Basically the process is the same as using a Windows PC except you don't need the Zaddig program to run. The correct USB drivers are already on new versions of Apple OS. I did have 2 problems that initially prevented Companion from flashing the radio:

1) I had a data cable but it was plugged into a multi-port USB connector. I reinstalled the USB cable direct to the MAC.

2) I initially had Companion running when I connected the radio with the USB cable. This didn't work. I discovered that I needed to close Companion, connected the USB with the radio off, then open Companion. Doing it in this order helped Companion immediately see the radio

I've only held a Taranis so my opinion here isn't so valuable, but to offer an anecdote, one buddy at the club, Taranis user who had pushed me to ditch Spektrum and "get frisky!" first made fun of me for buying the X10S with the chic red knobs instead of a Taranis Plus. I think he called me a fancy-boy, or maybe a pretty boy with my "fruity red knobs."

Anyway, a few weekends later we run into each other at the club, X10S on the ground next to my plane. He sort of reprimanded me for not using a case. I offered to let him hold it, but he declined, as if he were afraid to hold something that would immediately render his Taranis a perceived inferior disappointment to fly his planes with.

Transmitter envy.

It does come with a nice case that I should probably use.
