Camp n Fly 2025!!! May 3-4th!!

One thing I was struggling with for a while was how to get a perfectly cut hole for the wing to slide through the motor pods at the exact spot they passed through it. And then I remembered that I already had a perfectly cut hole from the original foam I cut it out of and I actually only needed to do a little bit of math and cut a rectangle out.

Of course there is still risk, but when I fly foam I for sure pay less attention to traffic than I do when I'm flying something else,. I know you do as well, I suspect many others do too. It just seems to me it would not to be too large of an ask for a couple "no combat" time slots, that ought to be enough. It has grown into a large enough event that some structure is warranted.
Of course we can. :) And yes. I do pay less attention with foam, you are correct. LOL. But I do know quite a few people that only fly watching their own plane, even when all moldies are up. 🤣 Plus being on a bluff, most people tend to look one side of the other as their plane passes and do not look the other direction before coming back across. I definitly do not want to discourage the moldies from coming out to play. Happy to make a "modlies only" time.

My fav event of the year, so looking forward to it! As always I've got a couple new planes to get ready.

Killer!

Thanks, Jeremy!

Looking good! I think you need to hold this thing in your hands so we can get an idea of what size your monster 38 really is.

I remember years ago a guy had made a fiberglass P-38 kit, and eventually he killed his flying sample, but even though he had the molds, he did not build a replacement. When asked why he stated he could not get excited about all of the fillets and sanding to make it look right. LOL It does have a lot of intersections with the wing and tail joints.

Yeah, it's a lot of foam. I'm going light on the scale. Like from the side profile on a flyby it will look pretty close but from the top view I have thinned it up a lot. The distance between trailing edge and tail will be the same. But will see how it goes on the fillets. If nothing else I may do some rubberized glue fillets everywhere as that will really stiffen it up. BUT since this will be covered I may end up covering the wing before it slides through the motor pods and fuselage. So then you know glue's not going to stick as well so I'm still thinking all that out.

If possible, just don't cover it at those places, Nate.

My son got me this blast from the past for Christmas NIB! It's 7 channel, just like the one I had when I sent to my first NATS in 1984. I never thought I'd be happy to see a 72MHz system again, but this is so darn cool! I'm putting it in my 100" Ridge Runner that was built in 1973 for my OFB Len Ledson to race at the RCM Trophy Races, now called the ISR. I'll have it with me at Sunset, so maybe we can pass the transmitter around a bit so we can all feel like we're fishing again. It's amazing how tiny it feels in my hands compared to the modern stuff.

Holy Cannoli, I had one of those. It's got to be 50 years old. (The same as me.)

Are the instructions still in Aramaic?

Red sent me that pic when he got that radio for Christmas and man... What a trip down memory lane that was. I've even found myself checking ebay and if I found a Futaba 53mhz 7FGK I have to say I'd be really tempted. The last time I went to Torrey Pines (it had been years) I was happy to see that they kept their board that had the clothespins. You'd arrive and pray that nobody was using your channel. So to circumvent that my buddy and I spent a number of weeks taking HAM radio classes so that we could get the 53mhz transmitters. My call sign was KB6KXB. My buddy and I had to learn Morse Code back then, I've heard that's no longer a requirement. It was worth the effort though, as we were the only two people on the field who were crazy enough to put in the time to get our HAM licenses.

If I recall correctly those radios set us back over $300 in 1985 money. I had to mow a LOT of lawns and wash a lot of cars, but again, it was totally worth it. I was so proud to own that radio.
