Bringing back MOM racing!

I am thinking of two models for the event, but would like to hear suggestions,
1) Magnus
2) Mini Q

BTW , I have never participated in this type of event, and would like to try just for fun and "personal enrichment".

thanks !
Glad you are going to give it a try Jure! My gut says the Magnus is probably better suited, but the reality is either is fine to try things out. I would suggest that you fly whichever one you are most comfortable with. I'm happy to help out if you need anything, feel free to reach out.

The pylons are here.

As much as I want to make it out to Banos for these first races, I dont think its going to work with my schedule sadly. If something changes, Ill do my best to make it but please take photos/videos and update us with how it all went!

Thank you to everyone who came out today. The wind was challenging but delivered some good rounds. The heat was nearly unbearable though. It was a long day for sure.

This is the start of what we intend to be a semi monthly thing, so having such a strong turnout is encouraging.

Special thanks to Ollie & Doc for the help arranging everything. It was also great everyone pitched in to help run the event, that’s what really made it work and will continue to make it work in the future.

Stay tuned for the next race date announcement!

I want to echo Red's thanks to all those who showed up to race today. I counted 17 pilots. It was really encouraging to see so many come out for the first event. I'll give a special shoutout to the several first-time racers. We hope you'll all come back for more of the events.

The conditions were in some ways better than expected. After about 10 am, the wind came in from the north east and provided all of us the opportunity to checkout our racers before the event. Sadly, it wasn't the hill best suited for the race nor the one on which the course had been setup. We waited for the expected shift to the hill with the pylons and the shift came in the early afternoon.

There were sixteen entrants in 60" and eight in unlimited. We flew one full round of each class. All the contestants got the chance to fly at least once if not twice. The was a bit of carnage and one midair during the unlimited event. All in all, it was a pretty typical MoM event ;).

The unwanted and uninvited guest of the event was definitely the heat. While not unexpected or uncommon, it left many of us, me included, absolutely fried. My phone agreed and decided to shutdown for self preservation. Unfortunately, I didn't get many photos of the fun.

Red and Doc, thanks for all your help to kickstart MoM racing again. It wouldn't have been possible without a group effort. Hopefully this is just the beginning of many more races and, with luck, it builds to a repeat of the ISR at Davenport.

Ollie

Thanks to everyone for organizing, showing up, and especially for bringing extra shade and water! I really enjoyed seeing old and new friends, as well as seeing the new 3D printed planes show up and prove their airworthiness! They showed some speed and promise!
I had a great time despite the heat! But the heat did fry a lot of ambition in many pilots to keep going late in the afternoon, I think. I'll Bring shade, Chairs and More water next time! Maybe even a mister!

Again, Many thanks to the organizers and racers who put in the effort to make this event work! Let's keep up the comradery!

I'm going to say it.. Let's never do that again... Los Banos in the summer.

I had a great time, but honestly the heat took a toll and I failed to do some of the one on one interactions with the new folks. Sorry guys! It was great to see the new pilots, I hope they were able to have some fun!

When it comes to MoM racing, I would rather fly in the winter than summer! Winds usually aren't subject to convective activity in the winter, and it's easier to get and stay warm that it is to try to cool down in the heat.

WOW in Kansas is May 11-17. No 2026 RC groups thread for it yet, but those are the target dates for the event. There is plenty of wind in KS, and May temps are pretty moderate.
Glad to see that MOM racing is getting some interest. I like the 60" ODR plane spec used for WOW, but any format can be fun, especially Dream Flight racing. Lower stress flying planes that bounce. But the one on one open class is pretty exciting.

ISR is a GO!
International Slope Race (ISR) Davenport, California
The World Championship MoM Race – May 15~17 2026

ISR? So what is it?

Held for over fifty years, this is the International Slope Race – the de facto World Championship of man-on-man slope racing. Guys, if you have ever seen, or better yet, competed in an MOM race, especially the Davenport ISR event, you will know there is no greater thrill than hundred-mile-an-hour screaming passes, four up, bumping wingtips and only feet or inches apart.

Where is it?

The event is held at “Las Trancas”, the Big Creek Lumber airstrip near Davenport. There is good accommodation in the nearby city of Santa Cruz, and competitors and their significant others usually make at least one trip to the city to enjoy a meal together, which is always a great way to unwind.

The course;

The course is 209 yards long – roughly twice the length of an F3F course. This may be challenging for those used to shorter races, but it makes for a great visual spectator event, where it’s easy to see who is in front and by how far. Cheer for your champion! The lumber-jacks soon became separated from the lumber-jills.

The races:

This is not solo F3f – it’s effectively the one and only World Championship MOM race. It’s flown in 4-up heats and a 4-up final. Make no mistake, unless you are good, the risk of mid-air collisions is high. I kid you not, MOM is a genuine adrenaline-pumping, stomach-lurching, nerve-jangling physical and mental race against the other HUMANS, and there are three of them out to get you, too, not a cold stopwatch. The close-proximity flying and the feeling while racing are impossible to describe – my advice? As a competitor or spectator, buy a new pacemaker battery! The fastest pilot across the line wins, and the feeling of winning is utterly fantastic.

Our benefactor: Homer (Bud) McCrary

This year's event will be the biggest and best in every way and will be dedicated to Bud McCrary, a pioneer aviator, advocate for sustainable forestry, and owner of Big Creek Lumber Company. Bud owns the “Las Trancas” airstrip above Waddell Beach, which is home to the ISR, and where he and the McCrary family have kindly supported us over many decades. Bud’s benevolence is the reason this event has been held and supported so well and successfully over the years, and it’s impossible to express how grateful we are for his support.

Our sponsors:

Both Aloft Hobbies and Aeroic Composites, and, of course, the host club NCSS, have been prime movers in this year’s competition and will support with the organisation, officials, the running of the event, and the prizes for the hard-working helpers.

On the fun side, there is one award that nobody wants to win: The (Dreaded) “Baskem Trophy”, awarded for the best and most spectacular crash of a perfectly good aeroplane!

We will be waiting to welcome you.

The welcome will be, as it always has been, warm, with lots of like-minded flyers and a friendly, non-pressure, but happily competitive atmosphere. Trophies will be awarded to the winners, and of course, there is the great honour of becoming the World MoM Champion

Are you a highly competitive pilot? Do you think you have what it takes?

It’s good to be king – so do you want to be the MOM racing Champion of the World?
