What do you use as a solder or brazing compound?

For flight controls I usually use 12% silver bearing solder. Actually at this concentration I think most welders would call 12% silver a brazing operation. (At this alloy level the heat needed actually allows the silver to migrate below the surface. Making a rather good mechanical bond)

I used a 20-year-old roll of "Dean's Racing Solder with ProFlux" P/N 2020,
which contains lead and 2% silver. I'm 90% sure I got it from Tower Hobbies.

Looks like Tower Hobbies' current offering contains 3% silver. Now lead free.
"TrakPower Rosin Core Lead Free Silver Solder 15g 1/2 OZ"
Tower Stock# LXBMKM Manufacturer Stock# TKPR0975

So what's the composition of the new stuff? Silver, tin and copper?
Should work for repairing Bronze Age weapons also, eh?

Bronze Age weapons. LOL

Most of my fill material stock is so old I haven't had the deal with the new lead free formulations.

I assume these low silver percentage solders can still flow out at low heat (only need a soldering iron).

Right, regular soldering iron for the Dean's Racing Solder.
Maybe a smidge more heat - apply the iron for a few seconds longer.
When it flows out, it flows just as well as common 60/40 solder.

We got some air under the wings of the FIRST using a bungee yesterday.
It is a very pleasant flyer, I will say.
More nimble, and better hang time than I expected at this wing loading.
A magic airfoil, perhaps?

Photos taken by Stephen of Wattenberg.
I believe Steve and I were brothers in a previous life.
Medieval Germany, most likely.

Is it my screen? But it looks like you have changed from a natural wood finish (in snow) to a white (in grass). Is this a varnish or iron on film? If iron on did you have any concern with the heat going through the thin veneer? But then low heat iron film would negate that fear.

I too really like the airfoils, sure a lot better than what we had in the Wanderer days! Back then I loathed the 2 meter as a TD ship. Today I'll actually try to compete with the standard and larger class ship if all I have is a 2 meter. With some luck (bad on their part) I can often do well with the modern 2 meter.

That is rattle-can spray paint. Dark blue on bottom, white on top.
While the Blejzyk natural wood finish has its charms; for me, max visibility is vital.
I like the durability and ease-of-maintenance of paint over film when there is a choice.

Two light-as-possible coats of Minwax Polycrylic added 0.2 ounces / 6 grams.
One coat of spray paint, top and bottom, added 0.8 ounces / 23 grams.
The balsa tail parts are covered with heat-shrink film.

You put an idea in my head now at the beginning of the flying season in the northeast.
Time for me to get back into going to thermal contests.

Dave,
Nice sign off from your column in MA. It really is all about the people we meet along the way and their influence on us. While I remember many of the engineering accomplishment on the building board. It is the folks that influenced us that we really remember, and their impact on us. It was nice going down memory lane with you.

All the best,
Konrad

Hello

first RC glider build, many many years ago flew free flight
darn makes me feel old
last spring build a flight test electric, ea gads it is inelegant
ok but not what I'm looking for in flying
this summer
started building some little balsa hand launch gliders
see J&H aerospace ( lots of youtube videos by Josh Finn )
and Nighthawk gliders
great fun, had not build anything using balsa in 40 years
forgot how to trim them, learning all over again

question

First Poly instructions are vague and seem to be written for the First +
are the wing tips simply glued on
placement of tow hook, schematic info vague looks like 1/4 chord back from leading edge
is there some wiggle room here
also i mucked up drilling holes in wing getting the collets? to fit, counter sink
gave up cleaned up holes packed them with
West will try using slightly larger dia. screws without the collet ?
will post photos when have camera cable
yours truly

hello back like a bad penny

glued on the poly tips, let set for 24 hours, one failed guess did not clean up the foam enough for good bond
re did it now look good making servo tray have two KS HD 47MG servos will they be ok on the Blejzyk First Poly

now for some fun

by James McIntyre (1827 1906)
Canada's cheese poet

Ode on the Mammoth Cheese
Weighing over 7,000 pounds

We have seen thee, queen of cheese,
Lying quietly at your ease,
Gently fanned by evening breeze,
Thy fair form no flies dare seize.

All gaily dressed soon you'll go
To the great Provincial show,
To be admired by many a beau
In the city of Toronto.

Cows numerous as a swarm of bees,
Or as the leaves upon the trees,
It did require to make thee please,
And stand unrivalled, queen of cheese.

May you not receive a scar as
We have heard that Mr. Harris
Intends to send you off as far as
The great world's show at Paris.

Of the youth beware of these,
For some of them might rudely squeeze
And bite your cheek, then songs or glees
We could not sing, oh! queen of cheese.

We'rt thou suspended from balloon,
You's cast a shade even at noon,
Folkd would think it was the moon
About to fall and crush them soon.

The KS HD 47MG is a pretty tiny servo for a plane this size, but if the goal is to keep her light, I suspect you will be fine.
