Aeroic Alpenbrise 4M build

Any thoughts on the wing setup 4 servos vs 6 ? It looks like from the photos that the UK supplied models only have one pre-installed flap horn, but two servo hatches. I'm assuming the second flap horn will be supplied loose for those going for 2 servos per flap, which is fine but it that really necessary for general sport flying?

I'm just putting a shopping list together and need to know how many servos to buy

Talk to the UK supplier about ordering in the 6 servo version if that is what you prefer. :)

I'm happy with 4 servos, as long as the flaps work ok that way. I'm not going to be doing DS with it or anything extreme. I was just wondering what those who have the model think.

I had a chat with James and the consensus is that 6 servos isn't really necessary, the capability is there for some who have a personal preference for 6 servo wing. So it's 4 servos for me, saves me a few pennies on servos;)

The pockets are there if you want 6 servos, but I don't think it's necessary. I've built and flown 3 so far, all with 4 servo setups, and all have been great. I really don't see much benefit to the 6. I was able to get mine in the fairly tight Sunset landing area with no problem.

thanks Red,

I was surprised that the 8mm servo on the ailerons was enough for a model this big, good job I read this thread otherwise I would have gone and got a 10mm servo (a 10mm thick servo wont fit I assume).

10mm will fit barely. I will have to make new covers with a tiny hump, but I'm fitting Tomas Liu TL-10's with the LDS hardware. The surfaces are very stiff so I don't think 6 servos is really needed.

It was awesome seeing them fly together
It sure is a lot of fun to do. We usually do more when we have the air to ourselves. I didn't realize people liked it so much, or we would have continued with more acro. Anyway, thanks to Nate and Kelly for grabbing the video. What a great weekend!

I think a lot of people were surprised at how fast the AB really is. Such a fun plane to fly.

That video didn't capture the good stuff. After a while you guys really got into the groove. I didn't film as I was enjoying the show too much.

Red and Ryan Jensen formation flying Alpenbrise models with friends at Torrey Pines today. The wind could have been a bit stronger.

Cheers,

Hey Guys, I'm the guy in the pic with the beard and was the third ship in the AB formation flight...that was the first time I flew that particular plane. All I can say is if you're on the fence about building one, JUMP IN! The ALPENBRISE is the best flying sailplane I've ever flown...it flies like a trainer if you want it to but gets with the program if its asked. I really think all I need in my quiver for slope is an AB, an Ahi and a good old combat wing. I was instantly comfortable with it and at no point did it act funny. The lift was ok at best but the AP performed wonderfully. Flying close with Red and Ryan is the most fun I've had flying in a long time. This has rekindled my excitement in flying slope planes. I am excited to get into some bigger lift and really have some fun. A big thank you to Red and Ryan for the fun flight and Thank you to Doc for designing such an incredible plane.

Hi Justin - glad to be of service!

I'm happy you like this model. It's Red and I think Ryan's favourite too.

Announcement:
Watch this space, no doubt Red told you - but for all who happen to read this, there is an A195 (5m) version coming soon.

A bit of history: 195" or 5M was the wingspan for which the Alpenbrise was designed.

Here, please let me hijack your post a little with new info::LOL:

I made the smaller 157"(4m) version to get the model out there and on the slopes and into the mountains in Europe, as shelling out for an unknown (at the time) 5M model might have caused some to be cautious. That seemed to have worked well, and all seem impressed with the model's performance, so now we will soon see the original design. Red, as the Aeroic official test pilot, will be testing the new plane as soon as we can get parts to him.

Introducing the Alpenbrise A195 (5M)

The wings will be 4-piece 6 servo type, easily transportable, and so the soaring possibilities for the larger plane are perhaps more than the smaller version, if you like GPS or high Alpine flying. Just for those who are wondering, the wings have a double sine wave spar and are joined by massive, UHM carbon wing joiners.

Oh and of course, this baby would be pretty impressive on the slopes, too!

Fun is the watchword!

Doc.
